Working with the Group Dynamics of Teams

In complex, pressured and rapidly changing organisational contexts, team culture is often treated as an afterthought. Yet the patterns of interaction within teams profoundly shape how purpose, strategy and leadership can be realised in practice.

Group dynamics can enable creativity, learning and shared agency — but they can also generate misunderstanding, fragmentation and impasse. Developing a systemic understanding of these dynamics supports leaders, consultants and practitioners to engage with teams in ways that foster movement, coherence and meaningful collaboration.

This interactive one-day workshop offers a practice-focused introduction to systemic ways of understanding team dynamics. Participants are invited to make systemic sense of group processes and to develop a more reflective and intentional positioning when working with teams and collaborative settings. The workshop can also serve as a useful foundation for those interested in further development in systemic reflective practice.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for team leaders, consultants, organisational practitioners and psychological professionals who are interested in working more consciously with team development and reflective practice.

There is no requirement for a formal leadership role or prior systemic training.

In this workshop you will

  • explore how meanings of effective team working are created and negotiated
  • recognise patterns of interaction that enable or constrain collaboration
  • understand developmental stages and recurring challenges in team life
  • consider the facilitator’s task in relation to cohesion, culture and group process
  • connect systemic ideas directly to your own professional contexts
  • develop practical reflections and next steps for your work with teams

Learning takes place through shared inquiry, structured reflection and experiential exploration of group processes, allowing participants to work with live dynamics as they emerge.

To support dialogue and learning, participation is limited to 16 participants (minimum 6).

Theoretical foundations

The workshop draws on:

  • systemic and social constructionist communication theory, including Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM)
  • group analytic perspectives on group dynamics and facilitation
  • organisational theory and research on effective and developmental team working

Theoretical perspectives are introduced as lenses for reflection and practice rather than as prescriptive models.

Programme

  • Introducing participants’ current team contexts and dynamics
  • Exploring meanings and assumptions about effective team working
  • Understanding stages of team development
  • Identifying strengths, tensions and fragilities in group processes
  • Considering the facilitator’s task in supporting team learning and development
  • Working with case illustration and shared inquiry
  • Experiencing a kaleidoscope reflection process linking theory and practice
  • Integration and reflection on learning

As a one-day workshop, the focus is on developing awareness and practical orientation rather than extended supervised practice. Participants often leave with new perspectives and questions about how systemic reflective practice can inform their ongoing work with organisations and groups.
